Austal Australia unveils VOLTA series
With the introduction of the Passenger Express 46V, a fully electric 46 metre catamaran ferry design, Austal Australia has introduced the VOLTA series of electric-powered high-speed ferry solutions.
The new VOLTA series by Austal involves on-shore charging facilities and operator in-service support programs.
The vessels integrate light-weight, low-resistance hull shapes with state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries specifically designed, tested and optimized for electric power propulsion, Austal said.
Paddy Gregg, Chief Executive Officer of Austal, said the new VOLTA high-speed ferry series reflects the future of commercial maritime transport, offering operators a cost-effective, zero-emission, electric-powered vessel.
“For any high speed vessel and even more so for electric-powered ferries, optimising vessel weight and performance is essential – driving not just operating costs, but the size and upfront purchase cost of the batteries and the charging system" Gregg stated.
The 46-meter first-class 'Passenger Express 46V' has a capacity of up to 450 passengers, a maximum speed of 25 knots and fast charging capability, with a daily range of more than 175 nautical miles.
By designing additional models for both commercial and defense applications, including autonomous vessels, Austal intends to extend the VOLTA series.
