Finnlines starts construction of hybrid ro-ro
Production of the newest environmentally friendly ro-ro vessel from Finnlines began on 8 June 2020, with the steel cutting in the Chinese shipyard Nanjing Jinling, the company stated.
The vessel is the first of three ro-ro hybrid vessels Finnlines has ordered. All vessels will be built with the latest available technology to guarantee the lowest CO2 emissions. They will be equipped with powerful engines, emission abatement systems and an advanced air lubrication system in addition to lithium-ion battery systems which allow zero-emission operations in port.
The first ro-ro vessel is expected to begin operation as early as next year, while the other two are expected to start operation in 2022.
In addition, Finnlines has ordered two giant Superstar boats, pioneering green values. The overall investment of 5 new vessels included is EUR500 million.
“The new vessels will modernise our fleet further and offer us the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions. These will be the most innovative and efficient ro-ro vessels in the world. We continue our successful track record in investing sustainable operation of our fleet”, stated Emanuele Grimaldi, chief executive officer of Finnlines.
