Global energy giant Shell completed first LNG bunkering in Gibraltar
Shell has completed the first LNG bunkering operations at the Port of Gibraltar.
Coral Methane, a Shell-chartered LNG bunker vessel, supplied LNG to Sovcomflot's Lomonosov Prospect, an Aframax tanker.
This is also a turning point for the Port of Gibraltar's LNG bunkering operations.
In 2018, Shell completed the construction of Gibraltar's first LNG plant, with a total capacity of 5,000 cubic meters. This LNG bunker license was applied for by the company in 2019. In January 2021, the Gibraltar government announced its approval.
“This is another great milestone for the expansion of LNG as a maritime fuel globally. The start-up of this location means the fuelling requirements of tankers which operate on less predictable routes are increasingly being met," stated General manager of Shell Global Downstream LNG Tahir Faruqui.
