Holland Shipyards Group delivers hybrid ferry
Holland Shipyards Group recently supplied the Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK) in Germany with a newbuild hybrid ferry Gaarden.
The vessel will function within the waters of the Kieler fjord as a cycle and footferry.
Gaarden, which measures 32.4 by 8.8 metres, is equipped with a hybrid drivetrain that can be powered either by generators or by a battery bank. The battery device will be used inside the center of town for sailing.
The vessel order contract signed in May 2019 provides an option for up to 3 additional sister vessels.
Holland Shipyards Group states that its orderbook includes many types of electric ferries, including another SFK ferry: a fully-electric Düsternbrook vessel.
The shipbuilder says that he has found batteries an suitable solution for the ferry market, but adds that he is still exploring other ccean and alternative technology and is interested in his first hydrogen project as well.
