Upon completion of joint exercises with a Spanish naval weapon, Luigi Rizzo was carrying out a patrol off the coast of Nigeria and during the patrol mission she received a notice of an ongoing pirate attack against a cargo ship about 100 nautical miles away.
Luigi Rizzo immediately sent her helicopter to assist the threatened device, after receiving the emergency signal.
While on the way to the area, Frigate Rizzo formed radio contact with the captain of the Greek flagged merchant ship, and the captain said it was approaching and harassing a small, fast boat with armed men on board. The small boat's attempt failed because of Luigi Rizzo's presence and interference, and her helo.
