Joe Biden to focus on ramifications for shipping and offshore
Eight days into his presidency, and there are already a host of Joe Biden-signed measures that will have enormous shipping and offshore implications.
An executive order signed by Biden called for a "enhanced climate ambition" focusing, among other topics, on shipping and aviation, the Arctic, ocean sustainable growth.
"Innovative approaches, including international multi-stakeholder initiatives" to address climate problems, including shipping, will now be supported by John Kerry, Biden's Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
Other primary announcements yesterday included the decisions to freeze new public land oil and gas leases and double wind-generated offshore energy by 2030. Biden signed the US back into the Paris Climate Agreement on his first day in office.
Biden has also axed plans for the Keystone XL pipeline with Canada since coming to power, while his recent Buy American order is seen as an endorsement of the Jones Act, a regulation requiring that domestic shipments must be carried on US-built ships.
