Powerful eco-friendly Sanmar escort tug named Tug of the Year 2024

Sanmar-built extremely powerful, yet environmentally-friendly, escort tug HAISEA KERMODE has been named Tug of the Year at the world’s premier biennial gathering of the tug, towage and salvage sectors.

The International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards (ITS) attracts top-level executives, decision-makers, and technical experts from across the globe and this year took place in Dubai from May 21 to 23.

The prestigious awards were presented during a gala dinner at the five-star Conrad Hotel, Dubai attended by 500 tug, towing and salvage industry leaders.

HAISEA KERMODE was first LNG-fuelled tugboats to operate in Canada and, like its sister tug HAISEA WARRIOR, can achieve a massive 100-ton plus bollard pull making them the most powerful tugs built by Sanmar to date, with the ability to generate indirect forces in escort of approximately 200 tonnes.

Based on the RAstar 4000 DF design from Vancouver-based naval architects Robert Allan Ltd, these dual-fuel (LNG/Diesel) feature an exhaust after-treatment system in full compliance with IMO Tier III emissions standards, and can perform the entirety of their regular 159 nautical mile each way escort missions using LNG as their fuel.

HAISEA KERMODE and HAISEA WARRIOR form part of the most environmentally-friendly tug fleet in the world, working with three Sanmar-built emissions-free electric battery powered harbour tugs – HAISEA WAMIS, HAISEA WEE'GIT and HAISEA BRAVE – on the west coast of Canada.

HAISEA WAMIS received the ITS Tug of the Year award in 2023.

Chairman of the Board of Sanmar Shipyards, Ali Gürün said: “We are very proud to have been in this project to create the most environmentally-friendly tug fleet in the world and are delighted that HAISEA KERMODE has received this award. To have built Tug of the Year winners, two years in a row is a major achievement. This tug is proof that looking after the environment does not necessitate a loss of strength or power.”
