Qatar Petroleum works on new LNG carrier designs
Qatar Petroleum has entered into a multi-party arrangement with a range of LNG companies to create new medium and large LNG carrier designs.
LNT Marine, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding announced partnerships with the firm on Wednesday (SWS).
According to Qatar Petroleum, the agreement paves the way for the formation of a Joint Industry Project (JIP) aimed at the creation of new LNG carrier designs using the LNT A-BOX LNG cargo containment system. Qatargas, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Shell, and Total are among the other signatories to the agreement.
The LNT A-BOX LNG cargo containment system is a new design that was recently introduced on the Saga Dawn, a 45,000-cbm new designed ABS-classed vessel that started commercial service in the second quarter of 2020.
LNG cargo containment systems are highly specialized and have seen little development in recent decades. LNT Marine manufactures LNG carriers and cryogenic insulation systems for marine applications, and is a technology supplier and innovator in the LNG market.
The LNT A-BOX represents a major development in LNG containment systems, showing the ability to improve LNG transportation economics in the coming years.
