The White Star Line commissioned three nearly identical Harland & Wolff ships, and built the three vessels of the Olympic Class between 1908 and 1915.
1) 15.000 people were employed for the construction of three sisters.
The Olympic-class ocean liners were a trio of British ocean liners built for the White Star Line during the early 20th century by Harland & Wolff shipyard. When Titanic and her sister ships were under construction around 15,000 people were employed by Harland & Wolff.
2) Three sisters meant to be the most luxurious passenger ships in the world.
All three were designed to be the world's largest and most luxurious passenger ships designed to give White Star an advantage in transatlantic passenger traffic. The plan was for Olympic, Titanic and Britannic to work the lucrative North Atlantic route. The three ships were very large and constructed to the highest standards, with well designed accommodation for all passenger classes.
3) Three sisters had different careers.
The second ship, Titanic, was to become world famous by sinking on her maiden voyage with huge loss of life. Her two sisters, Olympic and Britannic are less well known and had very different careers. In 1911 Olympic made her maiden voyage and stayed in service for another twenty-four years. During the First World War, Olympic served also as a troop transport. Britannic became "the most wonderful hospital ship that ever sailed the seas"
4)Britannic was the greatest hospital ship ever.
Seeing as Britannic is capable of carrying and treating as many as 3,309 patients at once, British military officials thought the former passenger ship would be a great help to the war effort.
5)Like Titanic, Britannic was destined to live a short life.
The Britannic was heading across the Aegean Sea on 21 November 1916 to pick up wounded soldiers. But its venture ended at 8:12 am with a blast. The cause of the explosion is still unclear, but many suspect that the ship was hitting a mine left by a German submarine.
6) RMS Olympic received the distress signal of her sister, Titanic while she was sinking.
RMS Olympic sailed eastbound for Southampton in April 1912, as the Titanic set out on its infamous maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. RMS Olympic received a distress signal from radio in the early hours of April 15 reporting that its sister had collided with an iceberg. The captain of the Olympics quickly changed course and rushed to her rescue. However the first ship to reach the wreck though was the Carpathia Cunard liner.
7) Modern-day replica of Titanic has been made: Titanic II.
Titanic II is a planned ocean liner intended to be a functional modern-day replica of the Olympic-class RMS Titanic. The intended launch date was originally set in 2016, delayed to 2018, then 2022.
