ABS to class Jones Act wind turbine installation vessel

According to the release of ABS, the first ever Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), a main vessel for the growth of the U.S. offshore wind industry, will be constructed in ABS Class.

The 472-foot vessel is now under construction by Keppel AmFELS, which is also engaged in engineering and procurement for Dominion Energy, and is built by GustoMSC to accommodate turbine sizes of 12 megawatts or larger and is also able to install turbine foundations.

The vessel will have accommodation for up to 119 crew and wind farm technicians, to be named Charybdis. Seajacks will support Dominion Energy with oversight of building and operations.

Charybdis is just the newest ship to be sponsored by ABS for the US offshore wind industry. The ABS Class will be designed for the first ever ordered US flagged Jones Act offshore wind farm service activity vessel.

ABS, a leading global provider of marine and offshore industry classification and technical consulting services, is committed to setting standards for safety and innovation in design and construction.
