MV Barkly Pearl is the ship in question and flies the Mashall Islands flag.
“Last night, AMSA tasked its Challenger search and rescue jet to fly over the vessel and it was able to confirm damage to the starboard side of the vessel, which was listing to port,” the maritime authority announced.
The 1993-built ship arrived from Indonesia in Australian waters, data from MarineTraffic reveals. It had no livestock on board, according to local media. When AMSA became involved, Barkly Pearl was about 120 kilometres north of Geraldton.
The Mid West Port Authority (MWPA), the port authority in Geraldton, reported in a separate statement that the shipmaster of Barkly Pearl provided the crew on board with a health declaration claiming that none of them exhibited symptoms of COVID-19.
MWPA added that no environmental effects had been made public, but as a precaution, it would deploy a boom around the vessel.
