On July 7, thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets of the capital, Sofia, and other cities to protest over-development on the Black Sea coast of the country and proposed changes to the Biodiversity Act that they said would allow development in protected areas.
At the end of June, the marches followed a surge of demonstrations, along with other, smaller-scale demonstrations over the past few months. There were also protests at Aitos, Blagoevgrad, Botevgrad, Burgas, Dupnica, Plovdiv, Ruse, Sliven and Tsarevo.
The protest accidentally coincided with a viral Facebook video in which Hristo Ivanov, opposition party leader Da, Bulgaria, goes by boat to the notorious politician Ahmed Dogan's secluded private villa, calling his residence near Burgas and the limited access to the nearby beach unconstitutional.
