According to the Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN), despite the work carried out to restore the propulsion of the ship and to repair other systems affected by the crash, it was concluded that the safety criteria for the ship to sail under its own power had not been met.
AMN states that it was in contact with the owners of the ship and with the Port Captain of Lagos, close to where the ship was anchored.
To assist the Maersk Elba, Maersk decided to send two tugs. The ship left the anchorage on a tow bound for the shipyard in Algeciras.
Also accompanying the tow is the Portuguese Navy vessel, the NRP Cassiopeia. One of the vessels that responded to the Maersk Elba request for assistance was a Navy ship.
