Eskimo-style ice fishing becomes popular in Turkey

As one of the largest lakes in the country is frozen despite harsh winter weather, Eskimo-style ice fishing has continued to be an outdoor activity as well as a source of income in eastern Turkey this year.

Every winter when it is frozen, Lake Cildir, the second largest lake in Eastern Anatolia, situated on the Kars-Ardahan border, attracts fishers from the village of Akcakale.

In the early hours of the day, fishers get prepared and walk on the frozen lake before they enter the place they are going to fish and throw their nets into the water after opening a lake hole.

“Lake Cildir offers different beauties to our people both in winter and summer. It is a very different and impressive job. They do it fondly. Therefore, they both make gains and contribute to the promotion of our region," said Mustafa Ugur Ozerden, the Arpacay district governor to Anadolu Agency.
