A fire broke out in the engine room last Thursday and spread to the very large crude carrier bridge, chartered by Indian Oil Corp for importing oil from Kuwait.
Tugs sprayed water on Monday to keep the metal cold, but high winds rekindled the flames
"Fresh flames have risen in the funnel section of the MT New Diamond Supertanker and firefighters are battling the fire using foam to contain the blaze," said the Navy spokesman Captain Indika de Silva.
Several tugboats around the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) hold it around 30 nautical miles or about 58 km east of Sangaman Point-the easternmost point in the district of Ampara in Sri Lanka.
The supertanker is floating, and the tugboats have to keep it in place.
