First I-class frigate of Turkey launched at Istanbul Shipyard

The first Turkish I-class frigate to be built within the framework of Turkey's MILGEM project was launched at the shipyard in Istanbul on 23 January with a ceremony.

The design of the third Ada-class corvette in Pakistan started with the same ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Hulusi Akar Ministry of Defense, and senior officers of the Turkish Armed Forces.

“Turkey becomes a country that meets needs of friendly and allied countries as well as itself in terms of land and sea vehicles,” President Erdogan commented.

Erdogan emphasized that Turkey is now also among the first three to four countries worldwide in terms of the development of unmanned and armed unmanned aerial vehicles with respect to the country's progress on UAVs.

The future TCG Istanbul is the Turkish Navy's highest indigenization-rate vessel. The ship was designed by Turkey's STM company. ADVENT, which was developed by Havelsan, will be the command and control system. The majority of sensors will be solutions made by Aselsan.

For the Turkish Naval Forces, the Istanbul class frigates are a proposed group of four frigates. Designed as the TF-100-class frigate under the MILGEM national warship program, the Istanbul class is an expanded version of the Ada class anti-submarine corvette, with enhanced endurance and the multi-role power fitting of a Mark 41 vertical launch system.

In the Turkish MILGEM project to establish its own indigenous warships and warship building industry, the Istanbul class has its history. The program calls for the construction of a family of twelve warships, with four ships in three classes, each with a high degree of commonality.
