GE announced that it will provide Sefine Shipyard with LM2500 gas turbines to power a Turkish Naval Forces’ new Fleet Replenishment Ship.
This new-generation ship, known as the DIMDEG project, will meet the fuel, water transport, and supply needs of Turkey's surface combatants in the open seas around the world, GE Marine said.
Turkish Navy's four multi-purpose Ada-class MILGEM corvettes are powered by a GE LM2500 and 2 diesel engines in a hybrid diesel and gas turbine configuration. The total propulsion power is 31 MW, which enables each ship to achieve a maximum speed of 29 knots or more.
The total length of each corvette is 99 m, with a displacement of 2300 tons. In addition, 24 LM2500s serve onboard the Barbaros- and Gabya-class frigates of the Turkish Navy.
GE has installed gas turbines on board 646 naval ships serving 35 navies worldwide and supplies 97 per cent of the United States Navy fleet's commissioned propulsion gas turbines.
“The LM2500 is GE’s most popular marine gas turbine and we are excited it was selected for the DIMDEG project. The powerful LM2500 brings quick start capabilities, easy on-board maintenance, and an outstanding worldwide fleet performance of greater than 99% reliability and more than 98% availability,” said Kris Shepherd, vice president, general manager, GE Marine.
