Greece argues to to extend the western limit in the Ionian Sea

Greece plans to expand the western frontier of its territorial waters in the Ionian Sea to 12 miles, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated.

“Greece will extend its western territorial waters to 12 nautical miles from six,” Mitsotakis announced.

Italy and Albania, which both have Ionian coasts, have been formally informed of the Greek proposals, and a bill on the matter will soon be submitted to Parliament, Mitsotakis said.

In June, two countries signed an agreement on maritime borders, creating an exclusive economic zone and addressing long-standing issues relating to fishing rights in the Ionian Sea.

Mitsotakis said Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will soon be visiting Tirana to negotiate a maritime agreement with Albania.

The proposed measure does not affect the Aegean region, off the eastern and southern coasts of Greece.
