The vendor base for Ingalls 'LPD Flight II program consists of over 600 manufacturers and suppliers in 39 states including 387 small businesses. About 1,500 shipbuilders are working on each LPD. Ingalls supplied the Navy with 11 San Antonio-class ships, and it has three more under construction.
The San Antonio class is a large part of the Navy's amphibious assault force of the 21st century. The 684-foot-, 105-foot- ships are used to embark and land Marines, their equipment and supplies ashore via air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles, augmented by helicopters or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey.
