While ports, which are under the purview of essential services, operate with limited personnel to ensure smooth food and other critical goods supplies, the lockdown has slowed down the activity.
The order issued by the shipping ministry on Tuesday demanded that ports not impose demurrage and other charges until April 14, when the lockdown ends.
Some ports in India including those operated by Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd (APSEZ) have declared force majeure after the government announced the lockdown to avoid paying users damages for any delays in operations.
