A statement from the Minister of Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani, Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini, Minister of Tourism Massimo Garavaglia and Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility Enrico Giovannini confirmed that the decision was taken on March 25 to "protect a historical-cultural heritage not only of Italy but of the entire world."
The statement emphasizes that this is just a temporary solution, and that a better one is being created. A competition for ideas has been launched to get the landings out of the lagoon and to address the problem of large ship transit in Venice in a "structural and conclusive way."
Previously, cruise ships sailing on the Giudecca canal could dock at the tourist terminal in Venice's historic center near St Mark's Square.
