LNG-ready 16,000 TEU newbuilds of HMM enters into service

The first of eight 16,000 TEU-class newbuilding containerships is set to enter service in March, according to South Korea's national flag carrier HMM.

“Our 16,000 TEU vessels are equipped with an open-loop scrubber system embedded with hybrid-ready technology. Additionally, selective catalytic reduction technology will reduce nitrogen oxides by 80% or more compared to the industry average,” HMM announced.

Hyundai Heavy Industries, a Korean corporation, ordered the series in 2018. (HHI). All eight ships are LNG-ready, according to an HMM spokesperson who spoke to Offshore Energy – Green Marine.

The ships, according to HMM, have increased energy efficiency, allowing them to reduce their carbon footprints by up to 52% as compared to their predecessors.

The Alternative Marine Power (AMP) equipment on board the ships is one of the most notable features. It enables containerships to use on-shore electric power at major ports while still producing their own power while at berth.

Since they integrate a range of next-generation technologies, the boxships have been given the smart ship designation. To efficiently track and manage their status, they are linked to the HMM's Fleet Control Center in Busan.

The Fleet Control Centre offers an integrated network for vessel-to-shore data exchange as well as improved connectivity. In real time, it tracks the vessel's performance, location, fuel consumption, weather, and cargo information.

It also has a remote control system option for a variety of vessel operations, such as inspection and repair work on ship machinery.

From the second quarter of 2021, the eight new vessels will be deployed on the Asia – North European route.

HMM Nuri, HMM Gaon, HMM Garam, HMM Mir, HMM Hanbada, HMM Raon, HMM Daon, and HMM Hanul will be their names.

The newbuilds are part of the company's big fleet overhaul, which also included a 20-ship order. The company has already obtained the remaining twelve 24,000 TEU ships, which were all fully loaded on their first voyages.

The shipping company, headquartered in Seoul, has a global fleet of over 100 vessels.
