At about 12:30 a.m., the 39,784 dwt ship, Funing, lost power while leaving Tauranga harbor, en route to China.
Without control, the bulker was unable to steer and drift because of the wind and tides it snagged the chains holding one of the shipping channel's buoys.
It was then moved by the tide and the tides to the other side of the river, where it stopped near Mauao.
Tugs were sent to the assistance of the vessel, and were able to tow it outside the harbor to deeper water and secure anchorage.
After the inspection, a decision will be made about the need for any repairs and when, according to Maritime NZ, the vessel can safely continue its voyage to China.
For its 20 crew members, Maritime NZ said, there are no records of oil or other contamination from the vessel nor any injury.
