Lukoil launches cylinder oil for low-sulphur fuel

Russian-owned LUKOIL Marine Lubricants has launched NAVIGO MCL Extra, a marine cylinder oil for distillate, ultra-low sulphur fuel oil (0.1%) and low sulphur heavy fuel oil applications.

NAVIGO MCL Extra has been approved for MAN and Wärtsilä engines.

Referencing the 0.5% global sulphur cap on marine fuel that will be introduced on 1 January 2020, Stefan Claussen, technical and marketing director of LUKOIL Marine Lubricants, said: “We are ready.”

The petroleum products manufacturer said that since NAVIGO MCL Extra also covers low sulphur HFO applications, it will replace NAVIGO 40 MCL and be supplied globally.

Following the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee decision that implementation of a global sulphur cap on marine fuel should be brought forward to 2020 from its original proposed date of 2025, fuel suppliers have been looking into several options.

The current global limit for sulphur content of ships’ fuel oil is 3.5% by mass.
