MAN Energy Solutions receives engines order for 10 Shell-chartered VLCCs

For the Shell-chartered VLCC newbuilds, MAN Energy Solutions has been contracted to supply ten of its dual-fuel ME-GI engines.

Advantage Tankers, AET, and International Seaways will share the ten 300,000-dwt vessels.

The engines will be designed by HSD Engine in South Korea, according to MAN, while the shipbuilding contract was awarded to DSME. The latest order comes after a flurry of orders for the engine have been announced around the world in recent months.

In January 2021, MAN Energy Solutions announced that the total number of low-speed, dual-fuel references had reached 360, with the ME-GI clocking over 1.5 million operating hours on LNG alone.

MAN Energy Solutions claims that a 'Maritime Energy Transition' is needed to find renewable, decarbonized solutions for seaborne trade and transportation.

The first vessel ordered by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will be delivered in 2022. Shell has agreed to charter all of the vessels for a period of seven years.

The fleet will be delivered by the second half of 2023, according to DSME, with a total cost of $967 million.
