Meyer Werft to work on zero-emission cruise ship tech

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft, working on a number of new eco-friendly technical solutions for cruise ships, is planning for the post-COVID-19 future.

The shipbuilder is working at the same time to complete two cruise ships scheduled for delivery in 2021. Odyssey of the Seas, the second Quantum Ultra Class cruise ship from Royal Caribbean International, is one of them. At the outfitting pier at the shipyard it is already berthed.

Meyer Werft successfully delivered two ships this year, amid the adverse circumstances linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Two new builds, Iona for P&O Cruises and Spirit of Adventure for Saga Cruises, were handed over to their respective owners in September and October 2020. In the coming years, the shipyard expects to undertake more large-scale projects.

Meyer Werft has implemented numerous steps to preserve the economic stability of the group since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. This included an investment freeze, a detailed savings plan, a temporary worker reduction and a short-time job instrument.

Around the same time, negotiations have been held with shipping firms to increase the time for existing orders.

Meyer Werft currently has a range of ships in its orderbook, with orders being in the pipeline from 2024 onwards.
