Until now, the maritime industry in the United Kingdom was the only sector which did not extend national minimum wage protection to employees. The UK's national minimum wage is now set at £ 8.72 ($11.29) per hour for staff aged 25 and over.
"This is just the start, our Maritime 2050 strategy clearly sets the vision to see a fairer global maritime industry and the UK is determined to lead by example,"The country’s new maritime minister, Robert Courts stated.
Last month, the courts took up a new ministerial role, replacing Kelly Tolhurst, who served just seven months before being appointed Minister of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
