According to Wärtsila, the contract, which involves two vessels, was signed in Q1 2020.
As mentioned, the Wärtsilä 31 4-stroke diesel engines will be operated by the vessels. It is said that the engine has a high degree of fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions are minimized.
Ordered last year by Guangzhou Shipyard International, a Chinese shipbuilder, the two latest 230-meter ships will be the largest ever to sail between Dover, England, and Calais, France.
“We have worked closely with P&O Ferries and their naval architects on the design of these ships, and in their drive for greater efficiency and lower emission levels that can deliver more sustainable operations,” Karls Hinks, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Marine Power, stated.
Four 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 31 engines will be featured on each ship. In Q2 2021, delivery to the yard will commence.
Wärtsilä Data Communication Units, which use artificial intelligence and are assisted by the company's condition monitoring network, will also be fitted with the engines.
