Expansion is needed to draw new cargo flows. In the port of Rotterdam, the transhipment of dolphins and buoys increased from 16 million tonnes in 2014 to 20 million tonnes in 2019.
The installation is in line with the Port of Rotterdam Authority's strategy to modernize and more effectively utilize the port sector.
The Port Authority wants to retain and further strengthen its leading position in the crude oil, oil products and LNG segments.
In 2015, dolphin configurations were substituted for the buoys in the Calandkanaal. Additional dolphin configurations (Dolphins 81) to be added were taken into account at that time in the design. This year the project will be carried out.
In addition, some dolphins, to expand capacity and functionality, will be added to Dolphins 82 and 84.
In the Calandkanaal, the dolphin configurations form part of a total of 29 berths in the buoys and dolphins of the port of Rotterdam. These provide flexible, effective, and risk-free ship-to-ship (STS) transfer facilities.
