RWE takes financial investment decision on its largest offshore project

RWE, Germany's largest utility, has decided to invest in the largest-ever offshore project, the 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm off the UK's North East coast.

“Taking the financial investment decision for RWE’s largest ever offshore wind project is a great moment for the entire RWE Renewables team. Successfully developing a project of this size once again demonstrates our expertise and positive track-record for delivering cost effective, innovative offshore wind energy around the globe," commented Sven Utermöhlen, chief operating officer for wind offshore global at RWE Renewables.

RWE will invest up to £3 billion ($4.1 billion) in the fully-owned project, with offshore construction beginning in 2023 and completion in 2026.

The project will be built on Dogger Bank and will feature a single offshore converter platform, with electricity produced transported through a high-voltage direct current export cable to Redcar, Teesside, 220 kilometers away.

All of Sofia's major suppliers, including Siemens Gamesa, Van Oord, and Prysmian Group, have preferred supplier agreements in place. In the coming weeks, RWE will work to finalize contracts with them.
