Samsung Heavy Industries wins $1 billion deals this week

Samsung Heavy Industries Co. of South Korea is continuing the winning streak in the LNG power order book, landing nearly $1 billion in deals on low-carbon gas fuel vessels.

In a disclosure on Thursday, Samsung Heavy Industries said it received a 458.7 billion won ($414 million) order from an unidentified shipping company based in Oceania to build four LNG-powered very large crude carrier (VLCC) units.

The Korean shipbuilder plans to launch the four vessels in June 2023.

With the new orders, Samsung Heavy Industries won orders within a week to build a total of nine LNG-fueled ships, including five container ships.

The shipbuilder procured a contract earlier this week to construct five LNG-powered container vessels with the option of building five more ships, which could increase the overall order value to 2 trillion won.

Ships will use environmentally sustainable equipment that meets marine fuel requirements set by the International Maritime Organization, such as lower sulfur content and carbon dioxide emissions.

They will also be loaded with Samsung Heavy Industries' self-developed ME-GI high-pressure gas-diesel engine LNG fuel supply system for use with LNG.

Thanks to its patented fuel supply system technology, it is the key technology for LNG control, both for the X-DF low-pressure gas-diesel engine and for the X-DF high-pressure diesel engine.
