Sanmar delivers pair of tug to Scotland

Sanmar Shipyards delivered a pair of terminal support/escort tugs designed by Robert Allan Ltd. to Orkney Islands Council Marine Services in Scotland.

A widely supported, local voting exercise initiated by the Council in November 2019 selected the special and historical names of Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa. Two of the three tugs currently owned by the owners replace the two 32-metre newbuilds.

With a shallower draft than other comparable high-performance escort tugs, the RAstar 3200-SX tugs are deliberately designed and incorporate substantial input and cooperation with Sanmar. This involves design optimization to reduce construction costs without reducing end efficiency, input from the large number of companies already operating Sanmar built tugs and pre-engineering features designed by Robert Allan Ltd, such as deck machinery, accommodation layout, etc., in order to easily enable potential customization requests received from their global customers.

A twin Z-drive, diesel-powered vessel, designed to perform ship-handling, towing and escort duties, is the RAstar 3200-SX escort / ship-assist tug.

Propulsion consists of two main diesels from Caterpillar 3516C, each delivering 2350 bkW at 1,800 RPM, driving a pair of US255 Controllable pitch Z-drives with 2.8 m diameter propellers from Rolls Royce.

With a strong DMT escort winch at the bow for escorting and ship handling operations, and a DMT towing winch, MacGregor Triplex guide towing pins and rounded transom at the stern for towing, the escort tugs are fitted for operations over the bow and stern.

Ship-handling fenders at the bow consist of a cylindrical fender upper row and a W-fender lower row.

For a crew of six, the accommodation was designed to a high standard. There is an entrance hall, a galley, a mess, two officer cabins with a bathroom and a laundry room in the deckhouse. The lower deck comprises one plus one double cabin with a shared bathroom and two single officer cabins with a private toilet.
