The Bill which has passed by the Lok Sabha last week, will make for India’s accession to the Hong Kong Convention that enlists environmentally sound conditions of ship recycling.
“The Hong Kong Convention lays down the measures as well as legal boundaries for enforcement of green recycling of ships,” stated Mansukh Mandaviya, Indian Minister of Shipping.
With the enactment of this Bill, India will set global standards for safe and sound environmentally-friendly recycling of ships, as well as ensure the adequate safety of yard workers. Mandaviya said this Bill will pave the way for more global ships to enter into Indian shipyards for recycling, and boost employment and business opportunities.
