The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center has given permission for the vessel to leave Sri Lankan waters and is likely to sail towards the UAE.
"Two navy ships are shadowing the tanker until it leaves Sri Lanka's 200 mile exclusive economic zone," Captain Indika De Silva stated.
The New Diamond caught fire in early September following a blast in its engine room. The IOC-chartered ship, loaded with 2 million barrels of Kuwaiti oil, left two long trails of fuel oil.
SM Vaidya, chairman of the IOC, said the cargo loaded on the tanker would be moved to another vessel at the port of Khor Fakkan in the UAE and eventually brought to the Paradip refinery for processing.
