The project aims to create a new form of energy storage, similar to very large power banks, which in the future will be critical for the rapid charging of electric ferries.
The center of the initiative is to map and analyze opportunities for the transport and automotive industry to reuse lithium-ion batteries for energy storage in ports, for example, to charge electric ferries.
Batteryloop is a subsidiary of the Stena Recycling Group.
The company gain visibility in electrificaition. A global partnership agreement with Volvo Buses for the reuse of batteries from its electric vehicles has recently been signed.
“New solutions are being designed to meet the charging requirements of the transport sector of the future, especially for shipping where vessels are starting to switch to electric power. Rapidly charging a large ferry, for example, requires a huge amount of energy in a short time and it’s not certain that the electricity grid will be able to deliver it," notes Rasmus Bergström, Managing Director of Batteryloop.
The project will run for two years and will be part-financed by INEA, the EU Executive Agency for Innovation and Networks.
