After 35 years of service the 'Mistral' (S-73) 'retires' today. In June 1985 she went into service with the Spanish Navy. The 'Mistral' loss leaves the Spanish Navy only with two submarines.
It will be disarmed after it has been decommissioned, the available parts and components will be removed and it will likely end up scrapped.
The Spanish Navy has had three submarines of the S-70 class to date, awaiting the construction of the new S-80s which will take over from them. Two submarines will remain in service until the "Mistral" is decommissioned: the "Galerna" (S-71) and the "Tramontana" (S-74)
The Spanish Navy has not yet decided on the submarine's fate but it will most likely end up being scrapped.
The S-80 Plus class (or Isaac Peral class) is a Spanish class of four submarines being manufactured by the Spanish company Navantia at its Spanish Navy shipyard in Cartagena. The Isaac Peral (S-81), the lead ship in the class, is scheduled to enter service in 2022.
