Three of the four projects chosen for an eco-bonus include services to and from Stockholm's ports. The bonus was awarded to AB Rederi Gotland for switching from road cargo transport to sea cargo transport between Nynäshamn and Rostock, Germany. Wallenius Marine AB was awarded the bonus for switching from road to sea cargo transport in the greater Stockholm region. Between Norrköping and Kapellskär, IW Line Rederi AB won the bonus for switching from road cargo transport to sea cargo transport.
The Swedish government is taking advantage of the eco-bonus opportunity to encourage new improved sea transportation options in order to relieve pressure on the Swedish road network and reduce emission of greenhouse gases.
Other environmental benefits, such as onshore power for cruise ships, are being pursued by Stockholm Ports.
The project is a cooperative process between the port authority and the Baltic Sea ports of Copenhagen/Malmö, Aarhus, and Helsinki.
