One of the world’s largest crude tankers suffered a mechanical failure in Red sea of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, reported Iran news agency IRNA on Aug 21. “The ship’s crew are fixing the defect and the vessel is in a stable condition from a safety standpoint. Fortunately, the ship’s crew are in a safe condition,” stated Akbar Jabal-Ameli, technical director of the state-run National Iranian Tanker Company.
According to tracks and records, Helm was disabled in the evening Aug 20, or earlier. It is unclear if tanker was in load or in ballast. There are no records of tanker movements since May-Aug period of this year. The National Iranian Tanker Company reported that the oil carrier had a technical issue 75 kilometres off of the Yanbu port, in the Red Sea.
