Specifically, the MS Green Ammonia project will obtain confirmation of NOK 46.3 million from the Norwegian Pilot-E funding scheme. The alliance aims to launch a tanker free of GHG emissions in 2024.
Grieg Edge's first major venture is the MS Green Ammonia project. It is the result of a joint Nordic industrial group launched by Zero Emission Power Generation at Sea (ZEEds).
From the planned Berlevåg plant, the partners intend to have MS Green Ammonia distribute green ammonia to different locations and end users along the coast. All elements that are based on the market and end-users are concrete design, scale, and volume.
Grieg Star said the project has already formed LOIs with a range of industrial heavyweight partners in the midst of strong interest from ferries, offshore supply vessel owners, fishing vessels and energy companies.
“We regard the funding from Pilot-E as a valuable stamp of approval for our plans. Both Wärtsilä and we feel confident that this project represents the future for the maritime sector. To have the support from the Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway is a significant step towards completion,” stated Head of Grieg Edge, Nicolai Grieg.
Shipowners operating LNG-fuelled vessels provide an important source of potential customers, according to Wärtsilä. Ammonia could be combined with LNG depending on the engine type or, instead, the engine could be conveniently retrofitted to use only ammonia.
“We are in the midst of a transition to low carbon shipping, and the long traditions we have in Norway for cross industry cooperation is vital for the successful implementation of a new green value chain,” commented Cato Esperø, Head of sales Wärtsilä Norway.
