Yanmar has developed a maritime fuel cell system using hydrogen fuel cell modules from Toyota's MIRAI vehicle.
For field research, the device was mounted in Yanmar's EX38A FC pleasure boat. According to the firm, the boat is the first to formally comply with the Ministry of Property, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism of Japan's safety guidelines for hydrogen fuel-cell vessels.
Yanmar's aim is to test specific issues and solutions in a maritime environment in preparation for the deployment of a maritime fuel cell system. Yanmar aims to scale the maritime fuel cell system in the future by linking multiple units.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has declared a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the year 2050.
With global marine environmental regulations tightening, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry released its "Green Growth Strategy towards 2050 Carbon Neutrality" in December of last year.
The policy emphasizes the production of environmentally friendly energy and power sources, such as those for vessels that run on carbon-free fuels like hydrogen and ammonia.
