The world's second largest container ship begins operating
The Port of Barcelona today received the first port call from MSC Sixin, the world's second largest container ship, calling at the Hutchison Ports BEST terminal.
The MSC Sixin, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is part of the class known as "MSC Gülsün"-named after the first ship of this kind-and its size of 23,756 TEUs, 400 meters in length and 61 meters in width makes it the world's second largest container ship.
Currently there is only one other ship at sea, the Algeciras HMM, that has a greater ability.
Launched in 2019, the MSC Sixin combines the new innovations commonly used in the marine transport market. It allows telematic connection of so-called " smart containers, "has more than 2,000 connections for reefers and has been designed according to strict environmental criteria, resulting in significant CO2 reduction for each container being transported in relation to the average of container ships currently in service.
The goods unloaded by MSC Sixin in Barcelona include hand sanitizers based on alcohol, latex gloves and medical devices designed to combat the COVID-19 crisis.
