Wärtsilä simulation technology for SAMK
A navigation simulator and unique mathematical models have been provided by the technology company Wärtsilä to the Satakunta Applied Sciences University (SAMK) in Rauma, Finland.
This will be used as an important enabler in the Intelligent Shipping Technology Test Laboratory (ISTLAB) project, which aims to create a technologically precise testing environment for autonomous vessels which are remotely operated. The contract was signed in 4th quarter of 2019 with Wärtsilä.
The research laboratory project is the world's first of its kind and its innovative approach makes it of great interest to the global maritime community, and of great value. In addition, the system will identify and open up the possibilities and opportunities for remote pilotage.
Wärtsilä and SAMK have worked together for over 20 years. The university also has a full mission simulator at its site, completed in 2016, with six bridges at it.
