Wärtsilä to supply Carnival vessels with dry waste treatment systems
Wärtsilä has signed a framework agreement with Carnival Corporation to supply and install advanced waste water and dry waste treatment systems for Wärtsilä for up to 32 vessels.
“The system surpasses the most demanding standards currently set by the International Maritime Organization for sewage discharge, including paragraph 4.2 of MEPC 227 (64), which applies to special areas. Wärtsilä is proud and ready to support this focus with the most advanced and compliant solutions. We continue to work with Carnival to enhance their goals for waste reduction, in line with their internal strategy," commented Arto Lehtinen Director at Wärtsilä Water and Waste.
Wärtsilä added that its wastewater treatment plants are "well proven to handle black and grey wastewater," while the facilities for treating dry waste are designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
The company said that Wärtsilä's innovative technology and vast experience played a major role in being awarded this contract.
According to Arto Lehtinen, Director of Wärtsilä Water and Waste, there has been a rising understanding within the cruise industry of environmental sustainability.
The signed framework is aligned with Carnival's strategies for compliance with the current and most strict environmental regulations, according to the press release. The framework was signed in October 2020, Wärtsilä wrote.
